Polish Flower Focaccia Bread Art

flowerprecook.jpg

So I am a bit late to the bread making game. I am guessing that over the past year your social media feeds, like mine, were filled with images of homemade sourdough, brioche, and challah. Flour was impossible to come by; and to date, the hashtag #breadmaking has garnered nearly 100 thousand posts on instagram.

But of all the bread trends, by far my favorite has been focaccia bread art. It combines two thing I love: cooking and art. All you have to do is mix up flour, water, salt, and oil to build your canvas. Use any assortment of vegetables to create your masterpiece.

I took my inspiration from Polish folk art, which often features symmetrical colorful flowers.

My focaccia recipe came from the Sugar Geek Show blog.

This was my first time making focaccia bread , so its not perfect (and honestly was a bit flat). But it was delicious. If you have some time on hour hands and want to get creative, give this a try!

Polish Flower Focaccia Bread Art (1 pan)

Ingredients:

For the Bread:

  • 2.5 cups of flour

  • 1/4 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 1/4 active dry yeast

  • 1/2 tablespoon flakey salt

  • about a 1/2 cup olive oil

For the “art”

  • peppers (red peppers and mini bell peppers)

  • capers

  • olives

  • red onions

  • chives

  • green onions

  • basil

  • rosemary

  • thyme

  • parsley

To Do:

Mix focaccia dough, let rise, and stretch on pan. I’m not going to go into great detail on how to make the bread. As I mentioned before, I used the recipe from this blog (though I cut the recipe in half and only made one pan). So all credit goes to her. She does a great job of laying out the timeline so you can plan accordingly.

Once dough is stretched and shaped on pan, its time to decorate! At this point you are only limited by your imagination. Lots of great inspiration on Teri Culletto’s Vineyard Baker instagram account. I sketched my design out first but feel free to freestyle! Enjoy!
