Morristown New Jersey: Pierogies House

horiz.jpg

In suburban New Jersey, tucked tightly between a flower shop and a Malaysian restaurant, stands Pierogies House. Located about an hour west of New York City and neighborhoods like Greenpoint in Brooklyn, which is known as Little Poland; you might not expect to find a pierogi restaurant. But Pierogies House is a gem.

With only six tables, it’s small. But on sunny days the French doors on the front swing open, letting natural light flow in, doubling the capacity with outdoor seating. The decor takes a modern twist on the classic Polish kitchen. It’s sleek and contemporary design gives way to pops of traditional Polish flare: framed Polish floral folk art and pillows, a rooster statue, rolling pins, and a ridiculously cute pierogi pillow.

The menu features a handful of pierogi that are staples (potato and farmers cheese, sauerkraut and kielbasa, spinach and feta, potato bacon cheddar, buffalo, etc) as well as vegan options and a list of ‘specials’ that rotate every couple of weeks. Although I was only there for the pierogi, they also offer salads, soups, potato pancakes, kielbasa, stuffed cabbage and more.

We ordered four different pierogi to-go. Our stomachs were growling as the smell filled the car on the driving back. The anticipation was real, and it was worth it.

You have the option of getting your pierogi boiled or pan fried. All pierogi come with sour cream and chives. You can add additional toppings – sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, bacon bit or apple sauce – for an additional charge.

The dough on these pierogi were a bit thicker than some of the ones I’ve had recently, creating a sturdier pocket to hold all the filling. The pan frying was perfect and the dough was crisp on the edges.. You can eat these like finger food or use a fork.

Here is what I ate:

Potato & Farmers Cheese Pierogi: It’s hard to go wrong with this classic. Farmers cheese is similar in texture and taste to a cottage cheese. This pierogi is filled with golden potatoes, farmers cheese and onions. Its hard to get more classic/traditional than this.

Philly Cheese Steak Pierogi: These are super juicy and cheesy! Filled with good-sized chunks of steak, provolone cheese, portobello mushrooms, green peppers and onions. Super flavorful. If you like Philly Cheese Steak you will love these.

Jalapeño, Bacon & Cheddar Pierogi: The bacon in this one is thick cut and smokey. The jalapeño give it a nice kick. Jalapeño, bacon and cheese is one of my favorite combos, and the potatoes helps hold it all together. Similar to a jalapeño popper but cheesier!

BBQ Chicken Pierogi: This pierogi is literally bursting with BBQ chicken. The BBQ sauce is on the sweeter side. This is a great summer pierogi. I dare you to bring it to your next family BBQ! I guarantee it would be a hit.

Cold Beet Soup: OK, so I lied when I said that I only ordered pierogi. I had to try their cold beet soup, also known as chilled borscht, Polish gazpacho, or chlodnik. Its bright pink and full of flavor: both tart and sweet, which is a combo that might turn some people off, but I LOVED it. The soup is chock full of fresh herbs, giving it a fresh and complex flavor. Perfect for a hot summer day.
